Ain't my fault reception's best up here.

[ no it's not. reception isn't even a thing. but he didn't want to forgo what comfort he usually derives from being up and out of the way of the world with no real alternatives. ]

We don't have reception, Dave. [He's not very impressed, but he's trying to be patientish.] Can you come inside?

[ he clearly doesn't want to, but dave stands up anyway, letting his laptop fall into his sylladex. ]

Need somethin'? [ or just want him off the roof, he means. ]

[Yeah, he knows. He does feel a little bad about that, but.]

It's still raining. You are going to get sick if you stay out here.

I nearly got someone to agree to grant me a wish, too. [ like he can't keep that up inside? but ok fine inside we go ]

Tragic. What kind of wish? [Inside they go! As John...frets a little internally. At least they're inside and they're not being rained on, though he also turns almost immediately to load up the fire with split logs to light up.]

The kind that ain't grantable. [ god only knows. he half wants someone to hug him and tell him it'll be fine.

he half wants to sit on the roof and ignore reality. ]

So like it'd fail but that would be a lesson maybe?

[Naturally, the question is:] How do you know it isn't grantable? Or that it'd fail?

[ dave pauses but ends up heading over to the armchair he most often sits in. ] Some things are too much to ask for.

[He stays near the fire to poke at the logs, eventually pulling a match from his sylladex to light them.]

How do you know when you don't ask?

You haven't asked anyone to grant you any wishes, have you?

No. Why? I mean I have not really thought of wishes I want anyway.

'Cause if you had something you really wanted you might know why you wouldn't ask.

[windeity]

[Give him a little bit to think that over.] Are you afraid that it won't come true the right way? Or that it won't come true at all?

[parodeity]

I'm not afraid. [ he's always afraid, but. ] But some things it'd hurt too much to hear "no" to. So people ask for less or they just don't ask.

Doesn't it still hurt to kind of be left wondering? If you never ask, you don't get an answer at all.

Yeah, but... [ that's a hurt he lives with every day? ] That's more like a toothache.
