Yeah? [He had a totally different experience with Dirk so he can't really compare that.] Everything on the other side of the scratch always sounded weird. Did you guys talk a lot?

Not...a huge amount. I helped him with Cal and we caught geese. I have him my hex code. But enough to kind of notice all the glaring differences? He's like...kind of dorky.

I offered to have lunch with him every other day?

[He's about to counter that Dave's also kind of dorky sometimes but like. Not the time to do that.]

That's a good start. Did he agree to that? If things worked the way I think so that means you're like his teen guardian too, right?

Not quite. He was born 400 years after I died. [ so. ] He agreed and I said I'd ask you. He can cook fish apparently?

Oh. That's cool. [...] I don't mind. Do you want me to stick around while you guys do the lunch thing or do you want me to clear out so you can get to know him? I can go hang out with Jake or something.

Sure. I like Dirk so far. [Also yeah he's. Getting better at reading Strider by now and they're both kind of weird, so.] And maybe sometimes we can all hang out? When everybody is ready to.

I don't mind, but they were both being a little weird about it. [ he's not sure Why but ] I don't think they met up yet.

They haven't. Or at least like they hadn't when I talked to Jake and he was weird about it, yeah. [A shrug.] Whatever. It cannot hurt to ask and they can figure it out from there.

Yeah, sounds fine. I didn't want to pry. [ but he noticed the whole ??? thing. ] My understanding is they came from battles so.

I got the impression, too. But next time I see Jake I'll mention it and we can talk to Dirk when he comes over. Does that mean Dirk knows how to fish? [That's a safer question than asking whatever they talked about. Dave can tell him if he wants, but he won't pry either.]

My understanding is he basically lived in waterworld so yes? He like, offered to trade off cooking duties and you're kind of doing all of ours so if you wanted a break...

What do you know how to make so far that doesn't require me making it?

I can put vegetables in a pot and if I had bread I could do a sandwich. Also, one secret.

What secret? Also sandwiches count so I will give you that.

Yes. I'm saving it. [ sneakily, he shifts his hug from john's arm to john's actual torso.

this is the slowest hug ever but he's maybe gotten there ]

[Glad it took Dave 250+ comments to get to where he wanted to be. John's still fine with it, maybe because it's slow or maybe because he's kind of aware Dave's weird about affection so he doesn't do much outside of keeping an arm around him.]

[There's just a soft kind of affirming noise. Okay, that's fair. Also goddamn good to know I can count. Either way he just kind of assumes he's stuck like this for the night and doesn't care that much.]

[ so. and yeah john is maybe trapped but at least dave is almost entirely tension free now, even if he's still clingy. ]
