[There's a low hum of contemplation.] I do not see how it would be a bad thing for me here. I think you and I are working out pretty much how I expected. It's nice. I like having you around.
[ and there's one of those stupid phrases that's going to stick. because i like having you around is simple but it's also something no one he's ever lived with has ever said to him.
for...
obvious reasons. there's a tentative smile hidden against john's shirt but whatever. ]
Yeah? [ like, no, dave didn't know that. and he's asking why it makes sense to john, but. ] It's less stressful to have you where I can check on you, anyway.
[ hahaha that clearly won't ever be a thing that will ever come back to bite him ]
[Why would something bad ever happen to them???] Very funny. I'm not the only one prone to wondering off, douche. [But he shrugs a little.] I guess it makes sense because I like being able to hang out all the time anyway, so coming back to the same place makes it easier.
Bro didn't really have your homemaker vibe. With like, the cooking and stuff. [ "and stuff" here meaning "wanting me around and not being an abusive asshole". ] It's...nice.
Yeah. [Another thoughtful sound.] I think maybe Dad wanted to make sure I could take care of myself and other people because he taught me this kind of stuff pretty early. Like when I started to learn to play. [He doesn't bother specifying "piano" since he figures Dave would know.]
but he lets himself drift for once. the first decent sleep he got in this stupid place was listening to john play the piano. and then the second time, too.
this time he'll sleep for longer than either of those, though, curled up against john's side and breathing evenly, arm slung over him and face pressed against john's shoulder. it's never easy for him to fall asleep but it's easier when he knows exactly where his best friend is and when he's secure in the knowledge that nothing can take john away right this second. ]
[He stays awake for a bit longer. His hand moves soothingly and he's laying so Dave can rest comfortably in their fort. He continues, drifting in and out for a while and making sure Dave stays asleep before finally allowing himself to do the same. They can stay like that for hours. It'll be okay. ]

he tries again. ]
I don't know if it's the best thing for you, or if I'm the greatest roommate. But I like having you here.

Takin' care of me. You're so... [ and that's even softer. ]

Go to sleep, dude. It's okay. We can talk about the song in the morning.
