Like I said, there's nuance. There's compromise and negotiation, which are healthy in a relationship. The other thing, the toxic thing, is silencing yourself and suffocating your feelings.

Regardless of the choices I've made, that isn't a good thing for either of us or for our relationship.

Yes. I don't think it's good that I do, though. I'd like to try to learn not to. Honestly, though, it's difficult to successfully do that if you put your feelings aside for me, because it means that you're making sacrifices on my behalf and I can't stand it. Fair or not, I'd rather be the one with my feelings on the roadside if one of us is going to.

He knows it isn't right but the thought sticks in his head. He thinks about asking but he knows it would be the wrong thing to do. It might break something.]

The thing I hate most is making your life difficult by being me. [ for not having functioning feelings or anything else and always doing or saying something halfway wrong or all the way wrong, and holy shit dirk doesn't need that? ] You're a thousand times more...you're way more functional. [None of it sounds like it. Maybe being dangerously clingy, that feels like a Dirk thing, but it has never been a Dave's Bro thing from what he could see. On the contrary.]

Letting you shove aside your feelings or interfering with things that make you happy even just by existing are Bro things, too. I guess he usually did it more actively but that wasn't always the case.

[Dirk doesn't say anything immediately. He is listening again. He is trying to think of it from Dave's point of view. But part of it feels wrong, he knows it's wrong. He remembers something from a rooftop.]

Relations between peers is a whole other thing. It's tricky shit. We're both working things out on a relatively equal footing, and we both are at the same point in our lives. It isn't like when one person is older and is supposed to protect the other one.

[He does not rephrase Dave's words mockingly. He says them as words that were important to him, and words he wants to give back.]

You aren't my guardian, Dave. We've always been most successful when we've worked on things as equals. That's why I said we need to step back from trying to sacrifice our feelings for each other. It goes back to the unilateral decision-making discussion.

[Okay. Dirk pulls himself up and lies down beside his brother. He is careful not to touch Dave, although he isn't closed to him. He just doesn't want to encroach on his space. He isn't sure about what happens next so he doesn't say anything.]
