The memory I gave away was a monster moon in the sky. Not sure what the fuck that was about. But over Derse, you know, if you looked up - that's where they were. You could see them, or hear them, if you didn't ignore it. The elder gods, the horrorterrors, whatever.
Rose told me to go out and take off my shades and look and listen, so I did.
[ it's a tiny memory, one that barely matters in the long run of things. there's more that matters that he hasn't said. even this tiny thing is a trial to get out. ]
Or we could stick to things as they are. That was another offer. Or we could modify it, so you only have to tell me shit once a week or somethin' and the rest is free game.
[He trying to offer as many choices as he can. He is trying to keep Dave safe.]
Why did she suggest that? Aside from her love of all things Lovecraftian.
[ his brows draw together as he puzzles it through. ]
It was right before - somethin' else. I think they wanted to talk to me. It was like...peerin' through the dark portal of an eldritch red lobster and lookin' at the all you can eat seafood buffet. When I saw 'em, their voices got clearer and clearer. Even though that was true, I couldn't focus on specifics. But it was like...a plea for help.
[ he'd died, he'd looked at rose and they'd both died.
thinking of it, he's not sure he ever told dirk he knew why, or that they'd argued over which of them would die, or that he'd basically overruled rose overruling him and they'd died together. ]
[There isn't even a pause this time, just a slight frown that someone not Dave would have a hard time reading. Dirk is getting better.]
Decapitation comes up too often with me. Apparently that's what I did with the Dersite agent. And then stuck the head on a pole in the middle of Derse with a message for the Condesce.
Because one of my aliens said I should stop pretending to be asleep and send a message to the Condesce that we weren't going to take her shit with the attempted assassinations she kept tossin' our way.
It was the nice alien. Also, I'd spent my whole life hidin' from the Condesce, and she'd just killed Jane and Jake's dreamselves and tried to have mine killed too. It was nice to start a rebellion and tell her to go fuck herself.
[He kinda enjoyed it. Honestly.]
I promise not to decapitate shit all the time though. Myself or others. It comes up way too often.
I didn't raise my own fuckin' sword and cleave her head from her neck. You've decapitated shit in your memories. You know exactly what it feels like. You have to cut hard enough to get through the bone. Or fast enough.
[ it'd sucked standing there looking at her and knowing he couldn't do anything at all, that she was going to die and he couldn't save her, but - ]
I didn't kill her. I watched her die, but I didn't cause it. Her blood wasn't everywhere.
