[ no his shitty cat senses are tingling. it's friday, dave remembers, and with an absent-minded flick of his wrist he sends his shades into his sylladex. dave abruptly turns around, sliding his arms over john's shoulders and examining john's face curiously. this...completely disrupts the backrub in process, but okay. ]

Hmmm. [ he's staring, eyes half-lidded but entirely focused, trying to figure out if he's found something interesting or not. ] Half marks. I suppose it'll do for a start.

[If he didn't have control over it, his breath would be caught in his throat by the sudden movement and the sudden appearance of bright red eyes that he's bargained for. He does, however, give Dave a level look as his hands trail down Dave's sides and squeeze at his hips instead.

Laughing isn't exactly what he plans to do, so thanks Dave. Instead, it's a very faint flush and his eyes are a little wider but otherwise he's calm and giving Dave a small grin.]

DROP THIS LINE OF CONVERSATION ENTIRELY since he has no fucking clue what kind of orders would fluster john (or at least no clue what kind would work to get him to go red which dave is willing to give) and he's not sure he'd be great at ordering someone around anyway, but john's finger are curling at his hip and he's...

admittedly curious on how far he can push john, because it's fun.

he drags his arms back and sits up straighter and more or less figure #yolo and it doesn't fucking matter if he has no idea what he's doing because john will either listen or just laugh in his face, and that's positive in its own way. ]

Sure. He can humor him a little mostly since he's also a little curious himself, so with that he moves to slide off of the bed and sit on the floor to look up at him instead.]

[ ...why did that take zero argument jfc john. dave is in a general and specific way disinterested in being in charge. he's always preferred to go with the flow and to simply let other people decide plans of action, only digging his heels in about certain things and generally ending up feeling conflicted about that. so he's not sure, exactly, what it is he feels as john just immediately complies with not-a-request.

even having his shades off dave can be fairly inscrutable, and his expression is neutral bordering on curious with something deeper and quieter and indefinable.

he decides to figure out how he feels about it later. it's not one of those things he can figure out quickly and easily. ]

[He laughs a little, leaning into Dave's hand but also lifting his elbows to hover without touching him.]

You look ridiculous like that. [ a lie. john laughing is always one of his favorite things and the rest is...interesting. dave lets go. ] But since you're on your knees -

[ drawled out, but it's dave, so he's being a pointless tease and just shifts one foot onto one of john's knees, light pressure. ]

- rub that. [ no reason to keep john on the floor for a foot rub so he apparently is still just idly trying to get a clear read on his boyfriend.

presumably he wouldn't give a fuck if john said no, since he rarely asks for things that aren't stupid anyway. ]
