Shut up. [He at least makes a face but for whatever reason that's not his problem? He shakes his head though.] I'm not hiding anything, jeez.
You'll still be in the house? [This has nothing to do with the forest. This has everything to do with making sure Dave stays put and realizing how obnoxious and kind of scary it is to not have a communication device that's mobile and instant like usual.]
[ it's true. 90% of the day john just has no idea where dave might be, or if he's been turned to stone or not. it is kind of what happens when your only communication device is a laptop that works only sporadically location wise.
dave's eyebrows lift in quiet understanding, though. ]
I'll be in the kitchen attempting to make you food. You'll feel better after you've gotten clean and eaten something.
We should probably both eat. [But that's all he says before shooting Dave a grateful little grin and shuts the door to properly do the bath thing. He'll be out sooner or later.]
[While Dave's in the kitchen John's going to actually listen and take a bath to get rid of the mud.
Give him about twenty minutes or so before he drains the bath water and gets out, drying himself off. The pajamas by now have self-cleaned (how the fuck do godtier clothes really work?) and he dresses again before heading out of the bathroom.
He's still towel-drying his hair and his glasses are folded and hanging from the front of his shirt, but he wanders into the kitchen to see where Dave went.]
[ into the kitchen, pretty much. he's not really a chef at like...all, so he just kinda cut up some potatoes and onions and dumped them in a pot with canned soup. it's heating and should be warm if nothing else?
there's something uncomfortably domestic about his best friend with his glasses off, drying off after a bath dave insisted on. he looks away and doesn't bother to examine why anything approaching normalcy for other people always sets him on edge. he knows why, and he knows better than to try and get used to it, or anything else anyone else has been doing. ]
It's done, I think. I had some while I was cooking. It's food?
[His glasses will go on soon enough when they're less steamed from the water and his face is less damp. Still, he approaches and he just kind of tilts his head, watching Dave for a moment.]
Makeshift stew. I can get behind that. [A grin.] Thanks.
[Now that John's not covered in mud, Dave can probably see a bunch of tiny scratches because John ran straight into a bunch of thorns.]
You should eat while I look at those. [ tiny scratches or no he wants to double check, and he gestures at john's wveryhitng. ] I have like...bowls, I guess.
I'm not letting you check me out until you eat, too. [That is to say a.) he might be stalling and b.) he's not sure he believes Dave ate given what happened with the fish debate when they first got here.]
[He's still reluctant, giving Dave an unsure look even as he approaches closer in spite of being stubborn still.] You can check if we have a deal, Dave. Okay?
[ dave drags another chair over and takes one of john's arms without hesitation for once. while he's been weird about initiating physical contact with like...everyone ever, for a long ass time consisting of most of his life, there's no pause right now and dave's grip is casually firm and confident for once. he's still careful to avoid hurting john at all but he's methodically apparently going to check over every square inch of the scratches and scrapes, reassuring himself john isn't about to die or something. ]
[He sits still for the time being so Dave can examine his arms without fuss. It doesn't hurt exactly but it sure does appear like John ran straight into a thorn bush and didn't bother doing anything to fix that. Nothing life-threatening at least but there is that.]
[ yeah, well. he's shoving john's sleeves up a little so he can see exactly how far this goes, don't mind him. it'd be nice if he had an actual first aid kit, even if none of this looks like it'll get infected, at least. ] Why are you so dumb.
[ it's less exasperated and more despairing. what the shit do you do when people aren't around to babysit, egbert. ]
[Just. A plaintive little shrug but no verbal answer. There wasn't a lot of planning in this and he just kind of eyes his own arms before he shrugs again.]
I did not expect a maze full of thorns and brambles.
[ there's not really a lot he can do with what he has, for this. john just took a bath, the scrapes are as clean as they'll get, and dave rubs his thumb gently over one before sighing and releasing john's arm. ] Anything else?
[He has enough sense to look a little ashamed, following the movement of Dave's thumb with his eyes. He's aware there are some bruises probably developing from wrestling with a minotaur and crashing into stuff, but those don't seem that important.]
Yeah. [ yeah, maybe. dave runs a hand through his hair, then abruptly stands to go and sort out a bowl of soup which is...warm if mediocre. he'll shove that at john with a spoon before locating a chipped mug into which goes water. that gets handed over, too. ]
[He takes both of them, smiling a little to get Dave to lighten up a little.] Thanks. [But there's a pointed look as well. He was serious about Dave eating with him, too.]
