[He's trying for his friend and that's what matters. Dirk has never actually had oatmeal himself so this is new. Fortunately, it's the shittiness he has to understand, not the food.

When it's done, he destroys the thing he knows best in an instant, and it ends up a perfectly decent bowl of oatmeal. With cinnamon]

[Dave you can't idle your way out of training by hanging outside your cabin if Dirk's cabin is literally beside yours, and after a couple minutes of waiting he pops out to go to the place they practiced last and wait there. That doesn't work.]

[ yeah he can all he's going to do outside his cabin in the evening is sit out front and listen to music so he clearly isn't actually waiting for anyone? ]

[There's a pause. Dirk stops and looks at Dave.]

Uh. I wasn't sure if...

[If training was on. If Dave wanted to do it. If Dave had even wanted to do drawing lessons with him. If there was any point to this, if he wasn't just on a path to destruction again his or Dave's, if he could ever deserve Dave, if something had gone wrong somewhere and he hadn't even known how.]

[ it's verbal uncertainty he misses a bit of. he tugs off his headphones, raising his eyebrows. he caught the gist enough to respond. ]

...Unless you had other plans?

[splinten]

No? [He doesn't know what he's doing and he hates that uncertainty, the lack of control. He's afraid of it.] I'm lacking in the planning department. No schemes, no plots, not even an architect's drawings.

You were askin' if I wasn't gonna go or whatever, so I figured maybe you made different ones.

[ which. wouldn't upset him, really? he just isn't certain what to do with dirk being awkward, when he's awkward, too.

Sorry, no. [There's a pause.] It might be helpful if we just admitted that we're going to be stupidly awkward for a while.

[Little does Dirk realize that they will be awkward Forever.]

No one else has to know the ironic ninja silences are punctuated with what they're punctuated with.

[ or at least he has zero plans to fill anyone in. even rose and john, who will be receiving most of dave's haphazard forays into honesty and affection. ]

I get that from Jake, but it's about my criticism of his favourite movies and how it's me being a 'lame hipster douchebag.'

[Dirk glances over curiously.]

It's a grab bag. If we go to a better tech world ever I'll get Rose and John to record some shit. Maybe stock up on other things. Not sure the charge will last much longer anyway, though, unless I get Rose to enchant it.

[splinten]

My modified charger could do it if you wanted. Your MP3 player should fit in it and charge up easy. [This is what a kid does between breakfast and dinner: he finishes projects.

Presumably they are walking off.]

[ besides, he probably can get it enchanted. ]

Just my shades. They don't need much charging.

[But the response makes him quiet again, so he doesn't say anymore, or say that he's started wondering if he could destroy the low charge of a battery and make it full again, that this makes sense to him as something he'd understand. It feels like Dave doesn't want that help, and after everything that happened in his session, he reflexively shuts up.]

[ dirk going quiet has the domino effect of dave going quiet. maybe he starts mentally texting a friend, who knows. he'll come to a stop when they get to the area they used last time, though, shifting his weight uncertainly. ]

[Dirk stops beside him and glances over.]

I don't know if you want to start by getting into the Strife or if there's another order or method you want to go for.

[ he hates being in charge of things, lord. he equally dislikes not being in any control at all, admittedly, but. ]

...what're the goals?

[His head cants, considering. It feels like a pop quiz.]

Given how our last Strife went, our day one goals might best be an understanding of how we'll engage with each other in Strifes. That could help with adapting to losing flashstepping, and I can practice my thing on the go if one of us gets hit.
