[ so after the execution they'll meet up in clementine and emily's room again. dave once again takes a seat by violet on the couch, although this week he is more. neutral? than last week. quieter. whatever.

Last week I ended up goin' into the Library. Pried some of the boards back from the unmarked buildin' and saw inside. Got some books, also saw a huge monster inside. [ he will at least toss out the books they got: mostly science and math shit, but also other things. yay. ] Also went into the buildin' next door to this one. It was a pet shop, there were monsters, I don't recommend it.

[ in the same monotone, as he glances around: ] Not sure what I'm doin' this week. What'd everyone else learn?

Well, that's gross. Why is it there?

I don't know. It was in the Dark Room when I went inside. I think it's for... talking.

Like, the dead somehow need it to talk to you?

[She nods.] The Innkeeper says he has to "prepare" the Dark Room. He said it's a place between the dead place and the alive place. And Jason was in the dead place, and I was in the alive place.

So I had to go into the Dark Room, and he put red stuff on my hands and my head. I... think it was blood. Because it smelled like coins.

[Well. He looks at Emily seriously.]

Are you still okay with doing this?

[For a moment, she looks at Dirk, considering.]

If I do a good job, we can get gifts. Um. Rewards. And they can tell us things we didn't know. And then we can find a way to go home.

I don't want to be Empress, but... I'll have to be Empress. And this is kind of like being Empress.

Alright. [It's such a cruel thing. He wishes he could free her of it.] I won't blame you if you ever wanna back out, but thanks for takin' care of it. You're doin' a great job.

I don't want anyone to get in trouble. [Least of all herself.] And if we can get things that will help, it'll be okay. Like with your pictures.

[Reaching up, she touches his arm.] You can't go in the Dark Room anymore, though. The Innkeeper says you shouldn't go inside so much because it's not a good place.

[ stares at dirk in annoyance ]

I've stayed out since I was told to. [LIKE HE PROMISED]

It'd be a dumb way to die.

[ not like there are. smart ways.

well, maybe there are a few? ]

[He's firm here, a little annoyed in the subtle lines of his non-expressiveness but trying not to let it get the better of him.]

If I can't even keep that promise, what's the point of me?

Anyway...the GPA thing this week, with Akane's bein' lowered. The Teacher may not be a very nice person. If you can protect or lower someone's whatever the fuck, you'd think you'd protect it if you weren't. Ridiculous.

No. Deservin' your trust matters, and I'm not givin' it up.

[Whether or not Dave gives him that trust, and Dirk is sure he won't, Dirk cares about deserving it. He knows he isn't worthy. So he has to continue to act worthy to live with that fact.

We'll see if they do it again next week. It's an odd role; you suggested they might've been tryin' to figure it out.

Yes. He said it wouldn't be good to go in because you could die. Then we wouldn't have anyone to take pictures. And then Dave would get into trouble because no one would be able to protect him.

That last part hits even harder. He doesn't dare look at Dave, but his hand slips down and he squeezes Emily's hand gently.]

I'm not plannin' on dyin' any time soon, but I trust you guys to help me look after Dave too.

[There's emotion being held back there, if not perfectly well. It's a low fluctuation underneath the monotone.]

Hey, do you want some of the books we found?

[She trusts Dirk to protect even the most hard-headed, ridiculous Dave despite their help. The talk of books gets a smile.] Yes!

You guys went into the library? The Innkeeper said there was a building of books maybe if I looked... when I asked if I could have some books. I was going to ask Dave if we could find it.

I'm glad you found it already even if there was a monster inside.

We'll hopefully be able to take it out some time for free access to books. Hang on.

[He goes to grab her two books: one is Goodnight Azathoth, the other is The Skeleton Inside You which has a great picture.]

I asked the front desk for philosophy books and was given a few. Maybe if you asked for adventure stories, you'd get a result.

[(unsure) at that Goodnight Azathoth, but she is surprisingly??? okay??? with the fucking skeleton book. Very factually informative. So many bones. SKELETONS. If only they made shitty puns.

But this is fine. She seems rather happy and curious about them as he brings them back.] This one is what's on our insides. Mister Sokolov has told me about this before! He's the Royal Physician, so he knows all about our insides.

What is "Goodnight Azathoth"?

I think it's okay... if the Innkeeper is there too. It wasn't... scary. It felt like... the Void. Except for the bowl... and the tongue... and the blood.
