Oh, I'm good with geometry, that ain't so bad. It's nice to see you in person, btw?
[ yeah dave isn't...flamboyant in person. his voice is even a little quiet and even, a calm monotone...pretty much the most out there thing about him is his shades.
and the way he literally says acronyms aloud but whatever. ]
[She kind of keeps expecting him to take them off because they're indoors, but...you do you, Dave. You do you.]
It's nice to see you too, Dave! [Gringrin. She gestures to a plate of small donuts, cookies, & pumpkin bread.]
I have some snacks if you get hungry so...help yourself! [She'll take a bite of a cookie as she flips open her workbook to the sea of triangles that has taken her life hostage.]
I thought I understood it, but then they keep adding new rules and different kinds of triangles and it's so hard to remember them all...
[She blinks a few times, taken aback by the magnanimous rhymes and punchy, articulate flow. She leans her cheek on her fist, watching him with her mouth slightly agape. Of course he's rapping about math and funky triangles. Should she have expected anything less from the guy wearing sunglasses in door with the emotive expression of a pair of socks? How cool he is...makes her slightly uncomfortable. There's no way this guy is ever going to want to be around someone as lame as her if he gets to know her, right?
Either way...the way he's rapping about it...makes sense...? You just have to...oh my god...]
Mostly how you managed to rhyme "isosceles" with "big mac with cheese", if I'm being totally honest.
Which I am.
[A soft laugh as she readies her pencil to try out her newfound logic.]
Lemme try one of these...
[Scribblescribblescribble]
I wonder if this is what my Dad meant by "Non Traditional Learning Methods"... I think he's gonna be really excited when I tell him all about you...[scribblescribble]
"Dad my new tutor wears sunglasses indoors and raps about triangles and hamburgers.'
[She looks up at Dave with a smile.]
I bet he'll think you're cool.
[more scribbling!! And then!! She lifts up her workbook to show him a miraculously correct equation.]
Yeah, see? Math ain't that hard if you like look at it in a way that isn't straight up boring. I think that's a problem that a lot of different subjects have, though...bein' dull, but not needing to be if they'd just do shit with a new spin, you know?
[ he smiles back, casual. ]
I always find stuff easier to remember when I put it to a beat.
["I always find stuff easier to remember when I put it to a beat." What a weird thing. To say, what a weird, strange boy.
She really adores it. Leaning forward with her hands holding either side of her face.]
Yeah! It reminds me of like...Those schools on TV where everyone just sings and dances instead of doing things the normal way...And they solve their problems with words and songs instead of vicious bullying...
Those kids seem way happier. [Jots down a few more problem, occasionally looking to Dave for approval.]
I do have a youtube channel. TurntechGodhead. Also, I do like music, but I guess it's just not what I want to do, like, professionally? I want to keep it free from monetary concerns, you know?
Do you have any idea what it is you might wanna do? But yeah, that's pretty much the why of why I do stuff. I think music could get, like, frustrating if I was tryin' to make money to survive off of it?
I'm not really good at anything! [A soft laugh and she crosses off another hellish triangle excercise.]
So I don't really know what I'm supposed to do when I'm older...I'm not cut out to be a wrestler...Definitely, not at all...
Too small, and weak, and clumsy. [She raises her arm, patting what is essentially an invisible bicep.]
The best art is made for the sake of art and the artist itself, not as a means for making money. And if you're relying on your art to make you money, and it doesn't...you might resent your own art. Which, I think, would be really sad.
[Takes a sip of the hot chocolate she'd been neglecting.]
There was this independent wrestler who was really frustrated, because he couldn't make it to the big time, or even get booked on one of the larger independent promotions...Despite that, he was really, really skilled at his craft. He got so negative and down on himself and his wrestling, that he eventually retired, because wrestling for a living the way that he wrestled just stopped being realistic.
It was sad....So, I definitely wouldn't want to be in that position.
I'm pretty sure everyone is good at somethin'? Like...maybe not something that people would say is immediately a talent that can be capitalized on, but everyone has their talents.
I actually think being friendly is kinda a super power.
[ dave offers up a smile, actually genuine. ]
It's not a thing that comes easy to everyone. And...you know, smoothin' things over and getting to know people, and bringing them together - I think that's a skill to be proud of...?
[The corners of Ayano's lips betray her as they curl into one of those smiles that is just too smiley. Embarrassingly smiley. Encouraging words, for sure.]
Gosh...
I can't believe I'm being tutored in math and life. [She looks to Dave with an expectant laugh.]
Thank you, David...[calling him "David" feels kind of like a gamble, but she feels kind of like she should be addressing him somewhat respectfully, at least.]
Maybe I'll end up majoring in communications at Uni?
It's actually just Dave in full? But yeah, why not? You could go into a lot of things with that kinda degree. But I also think it's fine to just go for basics and figure out what you like from there, maybe?
[SNERK. Who's full name is "Dave"? She kind of wants to keep calling him David anyway. She'll think on it for the next time he's fit to be addressed by name.]
Yeah! And...I guess for now we should just focus on getting me into University at all, huh?
[A big dumb, sheepish grin.]
I'm...pretty jealous of you first years, actually. I should be there with you, but...[Gestures to the funky triangles.]
Well, that's no reason not to hang with us? I kind of figure that ages matter a little less than bein' on the network at this point. I bet you can get an invite to any, like, social activities that are goin' on if not the classes. And the social stuff is more fun than the classes, usually?
[tfw ur bizarre rapping math tutor is a total sweetheart. Ayano looks up from a triangle to smile another unabashed smile at Dave. With a degree of bashfulness, she tucks a lock of thick brown hair behind her ear.]
Sure. You're welcome to come to any parties I'm goin' to? I'm not likely to throw any, but I know there's gonna be a housewarming at the Narukami's, at least...?
