it is not my fault your skills at tracking me by scent are not on par with jade's. also i think telepathy counts as a gps now? whatever, anyway. up. that is where i mean.
[He doesn't bother answering because he knows Dave will come find him. He's not all the way up on the roof of the gazebo like he could be, but rather he's at the look-out point seated on the ground and staring up at the sky as much as he can. By the time Dave gets there he'll find that John's definitely in a pair of the pajama pants Dave drew him, along with a hoodie, and he's comfortable while watching the sea creatures above them.
It's only out of sheer coincidence that he turns and sees Dave, offering a smile before nodding outward toward the sky.]
You can't see much because it's still dark, but I have never seen an ocean like this before.
An ocean in the sky? I mean, no wonder, it's kind of unique. The weirdest water features I ever saw were from one of the trolls' planets I think? Their memories of it. A giant fishbowl of water just restin' on a plain of grass or something.
[ dave has at least changed into pajama pants, but he's otherwise in one of his long-sleeved record tees, his hands shoved into his pockets. and of course despite the late hour his shades are on. while he had turned to look at the sky speculatively for a moment, he goes to sit next to john a few seconds later, leaving a normal amount of space between them as his hands come out of his pockets to rest on either side of him. ]
Trolls are so weird. [But he doesn't say anything beyond that even when Dave joins him on the ground. They're covered under the gazebo but not enough to obscure their vision, and John seems to be squinting into the dark.]
I wonder if there are whales or sharks up there. If it's an ocean, it has to have bigger creatures. Plus I want to see if we can get an understanding of those merpeople by staking out their territory. [There's a sheepish grin then.] ...and maybe I just think it's cool and am surprised there's a look-out on top of the house. [He's still not entirely explaining, but he seems content and more relaxed at least.]
[ well, dave won't push. he asked once and if john isn't saying, it's because he doesn't want to. he does shrug, though.]
I think there have to be fish and bigger fish up there, maybe. We could always ask around, but I don't think the Palai know much. It does make me wonder what's on the other surface. Maybe there's another layer to the world entirely, you know?
[Later, maybe. It doesn't seem fair to immediately mention that his talk with Madoka rattled him enough that he immediately needed to check on his cats. Still, it's easier to look up at the ocean and focus on that.]
So like an atmosphere sandwich? How is it even staying in place? Like, what is keeping the ocean from crashing and drowning everybody right now? It's one of the other things I think we should check out when we can.
A little, yeah. I do not think we can do negotiations with the merpeople or whatever, but it's the same thing. If we can get an idea of what they're doing...and also how they're breathing up there but can come down here. Unless they're more like frogs than merpeople? Movies usually show them as being stuck to water.
Not as long as we plan it out and go together. Whimsical whatevers don't always go wrong but as long as the apocalypse ain't breathin' down our necks we may as well be sensible. Make up some divin' gear, that kinda thing. Organize an expedition.
I am pretty sure we left behind the multiple apocalypses we were working with, so we should be good. Do you even know how to draw diving gear though? Like scuba stuff.
I can't. But divin' gear ain't that complex. You got the cannister, right, of compressed air or nitrox; you can't breathe right out of the tank so you need the regulator. Because the high pressure from the air or gas would damage your lungs otherwise? There's like two parts to the regulator, one that attaches to the cylinder and then one that goes to your mouth and is connected to the first stage by a hose. I can explain how the regulator works in more detail but I dunno if you wanna know?
[ a pause. ]
I like to know how shit works in movies sometimes.
You really are a huge nerd sometimes. [Says he, who is also a huge nerd.] I think I will pass? Jade tried to explain science to me multiple times and it was always sort of boring, and a regulator sounds the same. If it works, then I trust you to make things right.
[Then again. He trusts Dave with a lot.] ...was Rose still asleep when you came up here?
With the mastery of Time and everything, I know you can feel everything in the alpha timeline. And I know you know how things are supposed to be. But what about other people's timelines? How far does your aspect stretch when it comes to people not-us?
Far. [ it's what it's meant to do. ] Their timelines aren't written on my bones, but if I look I can see...whatever there is to see. If it has to do with time.
...maybe it's not fair to be asking since it's not our world and not our business, but there are some people here that I wish it was easier to say "yeah, that was supposed to happen and everything will turn out the way it is supposed to." It's a universal thing that bad things happen to good people, but it would make more sense if you could say "yes, this was the right choice even though it caused this thing to happen." Or even an idea of how off the timeline would go if you made a different choice.
Why do you think I wanted you to come up? [Because it's better than being alone. It's better than wondering.] I know that. Somehow you always have been even for the dumbest shit. Like, not that this is dumb shit but I mean other stuff.
[...] At first when we were on the ship, I thought that Davesprite was a Dave. And he is, like he's just bird-you, I get it. He's who you would have been in a different timeline. Davesprite is still a dude that went backwards in time to rescue my stupid ass and then doomed himself because that's what Dave would have done. But the thing is. Davesprite is different than you are. Even though you're both still Daves. And Davesprite wasn't the Dave I wanted around for the last three years, and. [And. And, and, and. "And when the timeline gets fixed, what if I get a different Dave again?" It's stupid and childish and not something he's going to talk about, not when he has bigger fish to fry.] And it makes you wonder about other people's timelines and what point in theirs does the split happen to change who a person is in one timeline and who they are in another.
[...and finally:] How much trouble do you think I would be in if I dropkicked a contract-dispensing deity thing?
